English Language Unit

Welcome to the Use of English Unit, a component unit of the Directorate of General Studies, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
The core mandate of the Use of English Unit is to teach the Use of English and the Technical Report Writing, all at the undergraduate level with the sole aim of enhancing the communicative skills of the students, which would in turn impact positively on their academic achievements and enable them to meet up with their job requirements both locally and internationally after living the University and contribute meaningfully in any literate society where they find themselves.
The English Unit has to its credit erudite scholars, who have creditably distinguished themselves in teaching, research and community service. The word of the Unit is its bond.

Short Biography
Prof. R.C. Ihejirika attended the prestigious University of Ife, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Uyo where he obtained B.A. Ed, M.A. and Ph.D respectively.

His areas of research interest include Applied English Linguistics, Syntax, Phonetics and Phonology and Semantics. He had published extensively in reputable journals both locally and internationally. He has equally authored, coauthored and edited books in English.

Dr Chika Glory Opara holds a PhD in English language with specialization in applied linguistics, English for
specific purpose (ESP), English as a second language (ESL) and communication science. she got her PhD from University of Uyo, she has taught at the Federal Technology university for sixteen years in English language unit of directorate of General studies, Federal University of Technology Owerri. She has also edited and analyzed many textbooks and materials in various fields of science. She is leveraging on her experience and knowledge of the principle of language and communication as well as academic interaction with colleagues in various fields of science to produce professionals who are able to communicate researched information and ideas to the society. Her major interest is to establish a link between science, technology and English language for the benefit of the society. She has published many peer-reviewed articles in many aspects of English language especially in ESP, ESL, applied linguistics.

Dr. Queen U. Njemanze teaches English language and Literary Studies, Technical Writing, and Communication Skills to University students (FUTO). She is a bilingual Africanist with a special interest in Sociolinguistic Studies and other Intercultural Studies and research. Dr. Njemanze has held various professional and academic positions in the university systems and community services. She served as the ‘Culturally Competent Consultant: Grow Teachers of Color, Minnesota, USA. She also served as the Executive Director of a Literacy Volunteers organization and was involved in non-profit leadership and other fields of education administration and mentorship. She acquired other graduate training certificates in numerous areas and concepts, such as The Student Support Graduate Certificate, and Higher ED. Administration Certificate, The Dyslexia Academy 1&2, & Multisensory Teaching Approach (MTA) certificate, The Teacher’s Social and Emotional Learning, and Instructional Coaching for Change certificates, Mental Health First Aid training certificates, and more. Dr Anthony Ezechukwu Ogu is a Senior Lecturer in the English Unit of the Directorate of General Studies, Federal University of Technology, Owerri. He teaches Use of English and Technical Report Writing. As a part-time lecturer at the Department of English and General Studies Unit of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, between 1995 and 2009, he taught several English language courses which include Comparative English Grammar, Morphology and Syntax, Semantics, Applied Linguistics, Stylistics, Language and Communication Skills, etc. Dr Ogu has published several journal articles and book chapters in English applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.

Dr Ken Uche Chukwu is a lecturer in the English Language Unit of the Directorate of General Studies, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, where he teaches English Language, Literature, and Communication courses, as well as general principles of research writing. He is also a facilitator to World Bank workshops on sustainable social standards. He has published extensively on subjects, essentially in literary stylistics, ecostylistics, ecolinguistics, cultural semiotics, and applied English linguistics.

Chioma Deborah Sunny-Adiku, (PhD) is an education expert, professional linguist, discourse analyst, researcher and instructor. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Education English from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She holds a Master’s degree in Linguistics and a PhD in English,  from the University of Ibadan. Chioma is experienced in adapting strategic teaching methods that enhance learning achievement. She has presented published papers in conferences, and written quite a number of published works in both national and international journals including book chapters.
