Social Sciences
Social science courses are courses designed by the NUC to be taught in institution of higher learning where Natural/physical sciences and Engineering are done as major areas of specialisation. Social sciences equip students with basic knowledge, skills, human and resource management experiences to upgrade their knowledge on their professionalism. It will also include cultural wholesome, education,moral instruction and environmental challenges and other related problems.
The aim of the general studies programme is to expose students to a course of liberal education through which they can develop and expand their awareness of social, cultural and natural environments with the addition of this programme to the specialized courses being taken by the students. It is expected that the graduates of Nigerian universities would go out better prepared to function well in the society. Social science GST courses are designed to produce well rounded morally and intellectually capable graduates with vision and entrepreneurial skills in an environment of peace and social cohesiveness. It will also enable them to acquire a body of situational relevant knowledge outside their field of professionalism or specialization for successful living.
In summary, the social science General studies courses can help to:
A) promote national and international understanding and interaction.
B) Forge and cement national unity.
C) promote and encourage scholarship and community service.
D) Contribute to national development through high level relevant manpower training.
E) Develop and inculcate proper values for the survival of the individual and society.
F) Acquire both physical and intellectual skills.

Edward Omeire is a pragmatic rural sociologist and development expert with a passion for exploring the complexities of rural development, ethno-ecology, sustainability, land governance, gender, ICT4DEV, and inclusive health. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Omeire is also an amateur photographer, a graphic designer, and a blogger. Dr. Omeire is the founder of Mencentral.net, a unique blog that aims to initiate conversations around men’s issues and the burden of masculinity. His work has a positive impact on society. As a dedicated and forward-thinking sociologist, Dr. Omeire is always open to new opportunities for collaboration, learning, and growth. Nkeiruka Ezeji is a lecturer in the Directorate of General Studies FUTO. She teaches Social Science-based general courses. She holds a B.Sc in Government and Public Administration from Imo State University, an M.Sc in Public Administration from University of Benin and is currently undergoing a PhD programme at the University of Benin. She has done works on representative bureaucracy and inclusive practices, and has journal publications in these related areas. Her current research interests include Development Studies, Public Policy/Gerontological studies and Gender Studies. She is a member of the International Research Development Institute (IRDI) and the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA).

Eze Nwosu is an international scholar whose passion is centred in unveiling the dichotomy of politics of international economics Relations between the core and periphery nations, security of States in the dynamic domestic, regional and international environments . His research Interest has covered questions in security studies, Insurgency, Counterinsurgency, intelligence and regional security in Africa. He has some publications to his credit. Eze acts as a security analyst to local and international media organisations. He is a researcher focusing on Africa in the international system, local and regional security systems.
In addition to his educational quest, Eze is a columnist on some national newspapers like BusinessDay, etc, the convener of Chitchat with Eze (an annual youth program). He is of evangelical cum apostolic Christianity. He authored a book ‘Don’t Give Up’ many years ago.
